Bourchier's Glade

Bourchier's Glade, 1921.

In Peter Dunov's life, there were certain habits to which he stuck, no matter where he was. One of them was to meet the dawn. Having settled in Sofia, he chose for his early morning walks a glade outside the city, by the path towards the village of Dragalevtsi. From that glade, there was a beautiful view to the Vitosha Mountain. It was the property of James Bourchier, a British journalist, correspondent of The Times in the Balkans. This is why the place was referred to by Sofianites as "Bourchier's". In the beginning, Peter Dunov went there alone. Gradually, disciples took to accompanying him, and the place becomes a favourite site of spiritual meetings and discussions. Going out early to meet the rising sun is invigorating, and on such days work is more gratifying. The Master demonstrated physical exercises for the development of physical and spiritual qualities. He taught the disciples how to breathe and how to adopt healthy habits that would have a beneficial influence on their spiritual growth.  ? In 1921, at the Master's suggestion, the place was purchased by the Brotherhood and became the heart of its activity.
