Breathing Through One or Both Nostrils

Electromagnetic currents radiate from the whole body of man. The rays emitting from the eyes, ears, nose and fingers are much longer and are different in color and character on the right side of the body than the left side. The left nostril accepts more magnetic (or negative) current, which is connected with the solar plexus, and the right nostril is predominently electric (or positive) current, which is connected with the frontal brain. The first, magnetic current, is connected with the heart and the second, with the intellect. There is an ebb and flow of the two currents. In some cases, man has more flow in the intellect, and sometimes there is a bigger flow in the heart.

The Master said the following:

When there is flow in the intellect, there is an ebb in the flow to the heart, and vice versa. When you say, "I am dumb, my brain doesn't work any more," no, this doesn't show that your brain is dumb; just that at this time there is more flow in the heart. When you say there is no flow in the brain you experience anemptiness. Other times you say, "I am a very intelligent man. My intellect is working very hard, but my heart is very weak." This is because you have a flow in the brain and an ebb in the heart. This is why you are insensible. When you have one side predominating, either your intellect or your heart, then you can bring balance between the two through regulation of these two currents by breathing through one or the other nostril

If you inhale air through the left nostril, the right one has to be closed with your finger. Then change and inhale through the right and exhale through the left. Inhaling air through the left nostril has a connection with the development of the heart. Then we exhale through the right nostril. But if we inhale the air through the right nostril, connected with the intellect, then the exhalation has to be done through the left nostril. This exercise is necessary to renew the balance between the intellect and the heart, or between the electric and magnetic currents.

If one of these currents becomes overwhelming, it breaks the regular breathing and then breathing is not full. Then you have to breathe through one nostril. Inhaling through the right nostril activates the intellect and breathing through the left nostril activates the emotions and the heart. But natural breathing is through the two nostrils.

The Master gives the following exercises:

When you are nervous or angry, do this exercise. Cover with your thumb the right nostril and inhale through the left nostril to the count of seven. Then retain the air to the count of ten. Then close the left nostril and exhale slowly and rhythmically to the count of nine. This exercise is helpful to regulate nervous agitation, to calm the brain and also to reinforce the memory. It is very important when you are studying some subject.

Morning and noon before eating inhale through the left nostril and exhale through the right. In the evening you inhale through the right nostril and exhale through the left. This exercise should be done twenty-one times through the day, seven times each in the morning, noon and evening. When this exercise is correctly done you will experience a very pleasant disposition.

Another similar exercise by the Master it is good to inhale air first through the left nostril as you count mentally ten to fifteen, then to close the left nostril, retaining the air in the lungs for thirty to forty seconds, then slowly and rhythmically to exhale through the right nostril. This exercise should be done three or four times a day. It is useful for those who are occupied with an intellectual work. These exercises preferably should be done outside in the fresh air and not indoors.

In the mental world, when you construct a building you always make two doors, one for the entrance and another for exiting. The same is true for our body, our nose. When we want to take a deep breath of air, close your right nostril with your hand, inhale through the left, retain the air for a certain time, then open your right nostril and slowly exhale. In this way you form two opposite currents. When you are sick or disturbed, do this exercise while thinking positive thoughts.

For thirteen days you can do the following exercise: Inhale air through the left nostril, with the right closed, and mentally pronounce this formula: "Only God's love is love." Retain the air in your lungs and then open your right nostril, closing your left, and slowly exhale the air, pronouncing the same formula. Do this three times a day, morning, noon and evening when you have time and are in a good disposition. Each time you do this, repeat it ten times.

Another similar exercise from the Master: Inhale air through the left nostril, slow and deep, retaining, then exhale slowly through the right nostril. Then reverse, inhaling through the right nostril, retaining and exhaling through the left nostril. This is to be done ten times a day.
